Life Lessons

My nieces and nephews have provided me with new perspectives. Their lives mimic mine in some ways but are completely different in others.

I created this blog a few years ago to document the adventures of my nieces and nephews both with me and when I’m not around. They amaze me in so many ways and I have learned a lot from them. This doesn’t surprise me because as an educator, I have found myself learning from students frequently. One of the things I love most about teaching is experiencing the class from a new perspective, seeing familiar material through new eyes.

In much the same way, my nieces and nephews have provided me with new perspectives. Their lives mimic mine in some ways but are completely different in others. They will all graduate from the same high school where my siblings and I graduated. However, they will have been in the same school system for their entire K-12 education where we started ours in Texas and finished in Iowa. Similarly, they have grown up with their aunts, uncles, and cousins as a regular part of their life where we saw ours a few times a year.

After I created this space to explore these adventures, life got crazy and I didn’t take the time to document our journeys. In the past couple of weeks, I have been wanting a space to explore our new current reality. I’m hopeful that the current ‘stay at home’ requirements are lifted sooner rather than later and that we have this virus under control. However, it may prevent me from being with my family for longer than I want. We are connecting in both new and old ways, with group texts and FaceTime chats as well as Zoom family meetings to see everyone.

For the foreseeable future, I will use this space to document both my adventure in ‘working from home’ as well as connecting with my family over the miles. Hopefully years later we will be able to look back on this and laugh at the fun we were still able to have. And hopefully, this will create a habit for me to continue to document our adventures once we are on the other side of this virus.
